“Propaganda is most effective when people don’t think it’s propaganda, and most effective when it’s censorship, which you didn’t even know about. When we imagine that the American military has only an occasional and insignificant influence on American films, we are greatly mistaken.
The actual impact has on thousands of films made and thousands of others that were never made. And TV shows of all kinds. Military guests and honoring the US military at game and cooking shows are no less important than ceremonies celebrating US military personnel at professional sports games – ceremonies that were paid for and delivered at the expense of US taxes and the US armed forces. The “entertainment” content carefully formed by the departments of the Pentagon and the CIA does not just insidiously prepare people to react differently to news about war and peace on earth. To a great extent, it replaces another reality for people who generally learn very little real news about the world.
The US military knows that few people watch boring and untrustworthy news programs, even fewer read boring and untrustworthy newspapers, but that the broad masses will enjoy watching long films and TV shows without worrying too much about whether something makes sense.
Film producers sign contracts with the US armed forces or the CIA. They agree to “interweave the key topics of conversation.” Although an unknown number of such things remain unknown, we know that almost 3,000 films and many thousands of television episodes were processed by the Pentagon, and many others were run by the CIA. In many films, the military actually become co-producers with the right of veto in exchange for permission to use military bases, weapons, experts and troops.
“Documentaries” on the Discovery, History and National Geographic channels are military ads for weapons. “Inside Combat Rescue” on National Geographic is recruitment propaganda. Captain Marvel exists to sell Air Force service to women. Actress Jennifer Garner has made recruitment announcements to accompany her films, which in themselves are more effective job ads. The movie called “Recruit” is mostly written by the head of the CIA’s entertainment department. Shows like NCIS promote the military’s line. Also do not forget about “reality shows”, game shows, talk shows (with endless reunions of family members), cooking shows, show contests and so on
The alliance between the military and Hollywood is the main reason that we have many big blockbusters on some topics and few on others. Studios wrote scripts and hired the best actors for films such as Iran-Contra, which never saw the light due to the refusal of the Pentagon. So no one is watching the Iran-Contra movie for entertainment the way they could watch the Watergate movie. So few people have an idea about the “Iran-Contra”.
One may wonder what kind of good topics are these, about which many films have been made? A lot of fantasies or distortions. “The Fall of the Black Hawk,” for example, turned reality (and the book on which the film was “based”) upside down, as did “Clear and Present Danger.” Some, like “Argo”, hunt for small stories inside the big ones. The scripts directly tell the audience that it doesn’t matter who started the war and for what, that the only thing that matters is the heroism of the troops trying to survive or save the soldier.”
