The Finnish are finished with allowing males younger than 30 to receive a Moderna vaccination against Covid-19
Yesterday, Swedish health officials paused the use of the ModernaCOVID-19 vaccine for all young adults and children after reports of possible side effects including myocarditis. Denmark also announced it halted the shot for patients younger than 18 years of age.
Mika Salminen, director of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, said Finland would instead give Pfizer’s vaccine to men born in 1991 and later. Finland gives vaccination shots to people who are at least 12-years old.
“A Nordic study involving Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark found that men under the age of 30 who received Moderna Spikevax had a slightly higher risk than others of developing myocarditis,” Salminen said in a press conference.
Health authorities in those countries noted reports of an increased risk of inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) and inflammation of the pericardium (pericarditis), especially for young men and in the weeks following the second dose.
In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends a two-shot regimen of the Moderna vaccine, calling the side effects in young people “rare.”
“Cases of myocarditis and pericarditis in adolescents and young adults have been reported more often after getting the second dose than after the first dose of one of the two mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna,” said health officials on the CDC web site. “These reports are rare and the known and potential benefits of COVID-19 vaccination outweigh the known and potential risks, including the possible risk of myocarditis or pericarditis.”
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle that can lead to heart failure or even sudden death. According to the Mayo Clinic, some common symptoms of myocarditis are:
Chest pain
Rapid or abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmias)
Shortness of breath, at rest or during activity
Fatigue
Other signs and symptoms of a viral infection such as a headache, body aches, joint pain, fever, a sore throat or diarrhea
Biotechnology company Moderna was founded in 2010 and specializes in pioneering a class of medicines based on messenger RNA. The company’s website acknowledges there may be risks of myocarditis associated with the their Covid-19 vaccine, which has received Emergency Use Authorization from the Food and Drug Administration.
“Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the lining outside the heart) have occurred in some people who have received the Moderna COVID‑19 Vaccine,” said company officers on the site. “In most of these people, symptoms began within a few days following receipt of the second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine. The chance of having this occur is very low. ”
The biotech company advises seeking medical attention right away if you have any of the following symptoms after receiving the Moderna COVID‑19 Vaccine:
Chest pain
Shortness of breath
Feelings of having a fast-beating, fluttering, or pounding heart
A Moderna spokesperson had said after Sweden and Denmark’s announcement yesterday that the company was aware of the decisions by the country’s health regulators.
